Making a Garage into a Safe Haven
A garage is a useful space to have, particularly if you need somewhere to get away. Instead of keeping it as a rather cold and forbidding house for your car, why not turn it into a cosy extension to your house? Often it can be hard to do ‘man things’ in the space of a regular house. Games, equipment and more, can be messy or simply take up space that you don’t have. And then, of course, there can be a nagging wife or girlfriend. Converting the garage can solve all these problems in one fell swoop.
Once the decision has been made to convert the garage, a plan needs to be put in place. Look at the space around and determine exactly what the space will be used for. Simple things like heating and cooling systems need to be carefully planned, where the electric wiring needs to be and whether this is a minimalistic setup or a grandiose one. Will you be in there for most of the day or just at the weekends? All of these aspects will have implications further down the line.
Floors, walls and the ceiling can all be decorated (or not) as you see fit. Tiles on the floor make it easier to clean particularly if you plan on having the boys over for a poker night. Food and spilled beer are much easier cleaned up from tiles than dug out of a carpet. Bear in mind though that some insulation will be needed around these areas if the room is to be cosy in all types of weather.
Lastly, to truly have the man cave effect, the furniture and other accoutrements need to fit with the vibe you are trying to create. Have your tools here easy to hand, camping equipment or sports stuff as you see fit. Sometimes a game table such as Foosball, Pool or even Roulette can be a great addition to the area. Remember, this is your place, put what you like in it.
However you create the room, make it cosy and comfortable. After all, you want to spend time in there.
