Have you ever thought about the enormous potential of your garage space? The garage often becomes a dumping ground for unused and unwanted that are cluttering up the house or too large to store elsewhere but with a little time and imagination, your garage can become your most useful room.
Start planning your new space by deciding exactly what you want it to be used for. Will it be a storeroom, a workshop or maybe even a place to keep your car?
Once you have an idea what you want from your garage space, you can begin to plan its organisation.
The chances are, your garage is already full of clutter. One big advantage of clearing a garage, as opposed to any other room in the house, is that it is easy to move things outside. Move as much out of the garage space as you can and sort it into three piles; one for rubbish that will be thrown straight out, one for anything that might be given away or sold and one to go back into your new, efficient garage.
Look around, and up!
Now that your garage is clear, take a look at the fabric of the space. In a room that is probably a simple box shape, it is important to make best use of the existing structure and to make sure that every inch is used to best effect. Walls may be suitable for hanging hooks or shelving. Don’t forget to look up! You may have beams that can be used for storing large items off the ground.
Large, clear plastic boxes with lids can be useful for storing more delicate items that need to be kept dry. For that ultra-organised look, trace the outline of tools or equipment hanging on your new wall hooks and then paint the outlines so that you will know where everything belongs and see at a glance what is missing.
